Categorization of perceptual stimuli by mind and machine
Emiel van Miltenburg & Alessandro Lopopolo
Research in computational linguistics has largely ignored studies about human categorization, and the relation between language and thought. Conversely, there hasn’t been a lot of interest from experimental linguists and anthropologists in the use of ‘deep learning’ models that have been employed to teach computers to relate language and visual features. This is a shame, because on the intersection of both fields are a lot of open and challenging research questions. We will discuss some of these questions, relating to the classification of sounds and images, and show that a collaboration between computational linguists and experimentalists can be mutually beneficial.
